Abstract

This article presents enhancements to Information Technology (IT) systems tailored for retail enterprises, focusing on a comparative analysis of Linux and Windows operating systems within retail settings, particularly at Points of Sale (POS). The discussion emphasizes that utilizing a Linux-based POS system enables functionality on hardware with lower specifications, thereby negating the necessity for more powerful computing machines. Furthermore, the open-source nature of Linux provides a cost-effective alternative to proprietary operating systems due to its free licensing. While proprietary systems are acknowledged for their user-friendly interfaces and general familiarity among users, they require more substantial hardware resources, incur additional licensing fees for commercial deployment, and present a more complex learning curve for IT personnel training. Consequently, this project seeks to explore and implement a Linux-based POS system architecture as a more cost-efficient and effective solution for small to medium-sized retail businesses grappling with routine technological challenges. The proposed architecture indicates that the integration of Linux-based POS systems can lead to significant reductions in operational expenses, thereby enhancing profitability and overall retail performance.
